General Connection Information

This metric is part of the Education-to-Workforce (E-W) Indicator Framework, specifically “E-W system conditions” which pertain to institutional or systemic environments, policies, and practices within E-W systems that support positive E-W outcomes.

This metric (Percentage of students reporting high levels of physical, mental, and emotional safety in school climate surveys) is a measurement for a key indicator, “(Indicator: School Safety),” and measures if students feel physically, mentally, and emotionally safe at school or campus (that is, safe from both physical threats and violence, as well as bullying and cyberbullying).

Calculating a Response

Use the following CEDS elements to determine the school year for which the data will be measured:

1. School Year = most recent school year, representing July 1 through June 30

Use the following CEDS elements to determine the universe of students:  

1. Pull all unique students which is determined by using a unique Person Identifier where Has Person Identifier Type = Student Identifierand Has Person Identification System = State, or if your survey responses are collected anonymously, use Survey Participant Session GUID
2. Where the Student:

a.      is associated with a State Education Agency through the Organization Identifier where Has Organization Identification System = SEA and Has Organization Identifier Type = State Agency Identifier

b.      is associated with a Local Education Agency through the Organization Identifier where Has Organization Identification System = SEA or LEA and Has Organization Identifier Type = Local Education Agency Identifier

c.      is associated with a K12 school through the Organization Identifier where Has Organization Identification System = SEA or LEA or School and Has Organization Identifier Type = School Identifier

d.      Has Role = K12 Student

From the universe of students, narrow the list to identify which students are reporting a high level of physical, mental, and emotional safety in school climate surveys:

1. Survey Identifier or Survey Short Name or Survey Title =
1. The U.S. Department of Education ED School Climate Surveys (EDSCLS)
2. The Panorama Student Survey (School Safety subscale), or
3. A survey of similar degree
2. Survey Administration Finish Date is within the School Year
3. Survey Level for Which Designed = Kindergarten (K) through Twelfth grade (12)
4. Survey Score Metric Type = Scale score or Raw Score
5. Survey Result Score Value is ≥ the level established by the organization are considered reporting a high-level of physical, mental, and emotional safety on school climate surveys.

Divide the number of students who are reporting a high-level of physical, mental, and emotional safety on school climate surveys by the total number of students who took the survey. Multiply by 100.
