This metric is part of the Education-to-Workforce (E-W) Indicator Framework, specifically “E-W system conditions” which pertain to institutional or systemic environments, policies, and practices within E-W systems that support positive E-W outcomes.
This metric (Student body composition by race and ethnicity (%)) is a measurement for a key indicator, (School and workplace racial and ethnic diversity), and measures whether children and students are exposed to racial and ethnic diversity within their schools and postsecondary institutions.
Pre-K/K12/PS - Student body composition by race and ethnicity (%)
Calculating a Response:
Use the following CEDS elements to determine the school year for which the data will be measured:
1. Early Learning Program Year = most recent school year, representing July 1 through June 30
Use the following CEDS elements to determine the universe of children:
1. Pull all unique children which is determined by using a unique Person Identifier where Has Person Identifier Type = Child Identifierand Has Person Identification System = State
2. Where the child:
a. is associated with a State Education Agency through the Organization Identifier where Has Organization Identification System = SEA and Has Organization Identifier Type = State Education Agency Identifier
b. is associated with a Local Education Agency through the Organization Identifier where Has Organization Identification System = SEA or LEA and Has Organization Identifier Type = Local Education Agency Identifier
c. is associated with a Pre-K school through the Organization Identifier where Has Organization Identification System = SEA or LEA or School and Has Organization Identifier Type = School Identifier
d. Has Role = EL Child
Use the following CEDS elements to determine the school year for which the data will be measured for K12 students:
1. School Year = most recent school year, representing July 1 through June 30

1. Academic Year Designator = most recent school year, representing July 1 through June 30
Use the following CEDS elements to determine the universe of PS students:
1. Pull all unique students which is determined by using a unique Person Identifier where Has Person Identifier Type = Student Identifierand Has Person Identification System = State, or if your survey responses are collected anonymously, use Survey Participant Session GUID
2. Where the Student:
a. is associated with a Postsecondary Institution through the Organization Identifier where the Organization Identifier Type = Office of Postsecondary Education Identifier
b. Has Role = PS Student
From the universe of students, identify which grade each student is currently enrolled in using the following CEDS elements:
- Enrollment Entry Date is ≥ July 1 of the school being reported,
- Enrollment Exit Date is ≤ June 30 of the school year being reported
- Has Entry Grade Level = Prekindergarten (PK), Kindergarten (KG) through Twelfth grade (12) for K12 students, Postsecondary (PS) for postsecondary students
From the universe of children and students, identify which children and students fall into each race category and ethnicity using the following CEDS elements:
- Race and Ethnicity =
a. American Indian or Alaska Native,
b. Asian,
c. Black or African American,
d. Demographic Race Two or More Races,
e. Hispanic or Latino Ethnicity,
f. Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander,
g. Race and Ethnicity Unknown, or
h. White
For Pre-K:
To get the Student body composition by race and ethnicity percentage, follow the following calculation instructions:
- Identify all children enrolled during the reporting year.
- Divide the number of children in each race and ethnicity group, by the total number of total enrolled children.
- Multiply by 100.
Repeat the above steps for K12 and Postsecondary students.
